| Abstract: | A concise presentation of as much information as possible concerning the principal characteristics of climate and geomorphology, structure, functioning and utilization by man, of those shallow lakes and wetlands in Africa which are relatively well-known. The Directory is divided into nine regional sections: coastal North Africa, Sahara, West Africa, Chad Basin, Southern Sudan, Eastern Africa, Zaire Basin, Southern Africa, Madagascar. The language in which each contribution is written corresponds by and large with the European language most widely used or known in the relevant territory with, however, a few exceptions: the Sahara is entirely written in English; the coastal lagoons of Nigeria are described in French, as is the east of the Zaire Basin region, comprising Lake Bangweulu and Mweru Wantipa. |
