Abstract:Abu Bakr's Bayan Ud-din, written as a textbook for the religious instruction of the Cape Malays, and printed in 1874, discloses an important piece of S.African history. The text is a close copy of the most authorative elementary handbook of the Hanafite school of Law which has been in current use throughout the Turkish Empire from the 16th century onwards.
