| Abstract: | In 1950 the Zimbabwean Jairos Dambgwa Jiri, who never received more than six months of formal education, created the Bulawayo and Bikita Physically Defective Society that was to become the African Society for the Blind and Physically Handicapped in 1954. In 1962 it amalgamated with two similar societies and became the Jairos Jiri Association for the Blind and Physically Disabled. In 1980 the Association carried out its activities in 15 centres all over Zimbabwe with the support of many associations and institutions in Europe and North America. |
