Abstract:This is a study of the Sufi singers (munshidin) of Egypt, whose praises to Allah and the Prophet form a critical element in Sufi religious practice and tradition. The book examines their training, activities and concerns while exploring the meanings and traditions inherent in their use of the great poems and religious texts. In examining the careers of the munshid¯in, the author looks at the roots of their musical traditions and analyses the ways in which culture and religion are intertwined in this popular religious expression. The book provides insight into the innovation and change in the centuries-old tradition of Sufi ritual performance and the dynamics of folk religion against a strong background of 'official' Islam. The author carried out fieldwork in Egypt in 1981.
