| Abstract: | Recounts the life story of a largely unknown black South African who was born in the year diamonds were discovered, 1867, and who died in 1948. 'Nongoloza' Mathebula, the founder of the 'Regiment of the Hills', was held responsible at the age of 19 for a strayed horse by his employer, a farmer in the Harrismith district. Resentment sent him on a road that led to the mining camp of Johannesburg (where gold had been discovered in the same year) and a criminal career of epic proportions. The legend of Nongoloza was well established by his death and lives on into the present, illuminating the role of crime and prisons in the making of modern South Africa. |
