| Abstract: | This Masters thesis is concerned with black West African writing in the period 1780-1900; white views of West Africa, 1900-1940; and West Africans' writing in the 1950s. The first section explores the writings of James Africanus Horton, Edward Wilmot Blyden, and Olaudah Equiano to establish the complexities of the dilemma of identity. The next section discusses Joseph Conrad's 'Heart of darkness' and Joyce Cary's 'Mister Johnson' within the context of the authors' experiences in Africa and the literary concept of stereotypic images. The last section deals with the writings of Amos Tutuola and Chinua Achebe against the background of the dilemmas discussed in the preceding sections. |
