Abstract:Based on more than 550 documents, this literature review together with the selected and annotated bibliography gives an overview of current knowledge and experience in hygiene education in community water supply and sanitation projects. The review covers a range of documents including unpublished reports and other material of limited access. Aspects covered include the importance and purpose of hygiene education, various target groups, changing hygiene-related behaviour, approaches to hygiene education, organization and cost of hygiene education programmes, manpower and training required, use of audiovisual tools, and school hygiene education. A selected bibliography contains 27 entries with abstracts in order to facilitate access to information on trends, experience and constraints in hygiene education in the sector.
