| Abstract: | The idea for this volume grew out of a conference on forced labour and labour migration in Africa held at Nuffield College, Oxford, in February 1987. It examines forced labour within African societies in the 19th and 20th centuries, the contract labour system of southern Africa, the takeover of land by white settlers, the impact of colonial capitalism, the role of both foreign companies and local labour recruiters, and the impact of labour migration on African social structures and the position of women. Papers are included on Namibia (R.J.B. Moorsom), Mozambique (Shubi I. Ishemo), Kenya (Tiyambe Zeleza), Tanzania (C.M.F. Lwoga; M. Mbilinyi), Senegal (Babacar Fall and Mohamed Mbodj), South Africa (C. Murray), Ethiopia (Alula Pankhurst), and Egyptian peasant women in Iraq (C. Fawzi El-Solh). A reprint of J. Clyde Mitchell's paper 'The causes of labour migration', first published in 1959, gives a general theoretical approach, setting the context for the case studies. |
