Abstract:The workshop was held in order to present the preliminary results of surveys by the Food & Nutrition Studies Programme (FNSP) in Coast Province, Kenya, during the 1985-1987 period. This programme is a joint effort of the Ministry of Planning & National Development, Nairobi, and the African Studies Centre, Leiden, The Netherlands, to obtain more information regarding the nutritional conditions of vulnerable groups in Kenya. The studies that were presented during the workshop can be classified according to two of the main subjects of the programme: 1. regional and seasonal fluctuations in food supply and nutrition, including papers on seasonality in the coastal lowlands of Kenya, protein-energy malnutrition in Coast Province, and farming systems in Kwale District; and 2. nutrition in agricultural and rural development, including papers on nutritional conditions at settlement schemes in Coast Province, and nutrition and dairy development in Kilifi District. Results of the FNSP in Coast Province to date indicate a low degree of food self-sufficiency of the farming population. Conditions in the settlement schemes are better, although here, too, food self-sufficiency is low and dependency on off-farm income high.
