Abstract:	This is a historical analysis of missionary and colonial schooling of the Maasai of Kenya. The development of schooling during the colonial days among the Maasai was characterized by two contradictory tendencies. There was a steady demand by the Maasai for education and a progressive increase in school participation. But there was also continuous resistance to schooling and defence of pastoral values and the age-set system. In chapter 1 the precolonial period is described. Chapter 2 deals with the early colonial period (1895-1914). In chapter 3 the first State schools are described (1915-1930). Chapter 4 deals with the establishment of out-schools (1930-1945) and chapter 5 with the preparation for independence (1946-1962).
