| Abstract: | In December 1987, Amsterdam was host to 300 South African artists, a mix of exiles from all over the world and 'insiders' working and living in South Africa. They came as participants in the Culture in Another South Africa (CASA) festival and conference. For some ten days they exchanged views on the cultural infrastructure of a non-racial and democratic South Africa, free from all manifestations of the apartheid system, while also giving expression through plays, musical events, literary performances and art exhibitions to the various aspects of that culture already developing inside and outside South Africa. This book reflects the many aspects of that culture. It includes many contributions from the whole range of fields covered: prose, poetry, fine art, photography, journalism, music, theatre, film and video, as well as contributions analysing such topics as the prevailing ruling-class culture in South Africa today and the complex questions surrounding the cultural boycott movement. The most important papers of the CASA conference are reproduced, preceded by a comprehensive account of the conference and festival. The book also includes photographs, songs, and poems, many of which were especially written for the CASA festival, all of which provide personal interpretations of the emerging culture of the 'other' South Africa. |
