Abstract: | This book evaluates the progress of development in the Sudan within the context of various theories, including modernization, dependency, and underdevelopment theory. Showing how these notions fail to provide a complete understanding of the myriad components of social change along the Blue Nile, the authors critique various approaches to development undertaken to date, describing the approaches in the context of market and exchange, civil and native courts, administration and politics, and village and development scheme organization. The authors focus particularly on the often overlooked role that law, markets, and administration play in the culture of development and the considerable effect the actors involved in these institutions have on the outcome of development programmes. Their research shows why an integrated approach to development that combines social, symbolic, and economic factors can best benefit the population of Third World regions. |
