Abstract: | This study attempts to throw light on the migration of the Hadandawa of Eastern Sudan and its impact on their identity structure. Selected indicators which are assumed to reflect possible change in the identity of an individual or a group as a result of migration to the town include descent, language, traditional leadership, education, especially that of girls, and life-style. The study is based mainly on an intensive field survey carried out in rural Hadandawa areas (Gash Delta, Sinkat, Derudeb and Tokar) and in Port Sudan in the period between 1984 and 1986. Contents: Introduction - The current situation of migration research - Internal migration in the Sudan - Environmental and socioeconomic factors in the Hadandawa areas - Types of Hadandawa migration - The causes of the Hadandawa rural-urban migration - Pattern of residence and occupation of the Hadandawa in Port Sudan - Rural-urban migration and the Hadandawa change of identity - Summary and conclusion. |
