Abstract:The whole system of pottery production from clay prospecting to pot firing is inexpensive, and interwoven with culture and religion. Traditional Yoruba pottery is an exclusive occupation of the women. This paper deals with the following aspects of pottery in Yorubaland, southern Nigeria: ritual uses of pottery; pots used for the storage of magical or medicinal preparations; pots for medicinal concoctions; taboos associated with pottery; ritual and ordinary uses of pot sherds; the making of ritual and ceremonial pots; kinds of pots; language use derived from pottery; and social and economic effects of pottery.
