| Abstract: | Spoken texts constitute an integral aspect of Anlo-Ewe music, and occur in various forms. The amount of spoken text available in one musical performance is determined largely by two factors: the artistic conventions appropriate to that musical type, and the ongoing musical situation. This paper describes and explains these spoken texts in terms of their content, structure and function, both separately and as they overlap in their composite realizations. Focus is on the musical contributions of spoken texts and on the manner in which they are performed. Notes, ref. |
