Abstract: | This paper discusses the possible role of improvements in rural transportation in Nigeria in enhancing the productivity and quality of life of the rural inhabitants. The central message of the paper is that rural communities must experience a quantum improvement in their transport situation if the socioeconomic transformation of rural Nigeria is to become a reality. The present deplorable transport situation of the rural areas is discussed, and the recent efforts of the Directorate of Food, Roads and Rural Infrastructures to improve rural feeder roads are appraised. The author concludes that although a good start has been made towards improving the conditions of the rural transport infrastructure nationwide, many States have performed poorly in terms of achieving the expected targets during the first phase of the rural feeder roads development programme. The need to increase the level of funding of this project is also emphasized. Bibliogr., notes, ref. |
