Abstract:Anthropologists have carefully examined the effects of employment upon domestic life. This paper examines the reverse: it investigates the impact of the domestic arrangements and concerns of wage labourers upon their security of employment. Unit of observation was the Diappolo section of Qwaqwa's only town, Phuthaditjhaba (South Africa). Research was conducted between August 1984 and February 1985. The first part presents a necessary outline of the employment and domestic settings of the research arena. Then the paper focuses on the relationship between domestic concerns on the one hand, and female and male wage labour, respectively, on the other. It is argued that a situation of patriarchal dominance has undermined stable employment among married workers. It undermines the ability of married women to retain employment. It also undermines the stability of employment among married male migrants: they are able to succeed as providers, but have to compromise desired social relations as husbands and fathers. Single workers are without such responsibilities and can achieve greater economic stability. Bibliogr., notes, ref.
