Abstract:The Bajuni people are an ethnic subgroup of the Swahili, and live on the islands along the Somali-Kenya border. The most esteemed item of Bajuni oral literature is the 'vave', a major cycle of agricultural songs which is sung on the occasion of clearing forest land to make new fields. The four songs presented here, in transcription, together with an English translation, are only a small portion of the 'vave'. They are preceded by commentary on the structure and content of the songs and the poetic devices used, and a brief comparison with other Swahili poetry. Bibliogr., notes.
