Abstract: | The Rahad Scheme is a recently established resettlement irrigated scheme located east of the Rahad river, Sudan. From its first year of production (1977-1978) the Rahad Corporation, the body responsible for the management of the scheme, faced critical labour shortages. It was planned that families living in the area would provide about 50 percent of the agricultural labour force. However, various demographic and socioeconomic factors hinder the proper participation of family labour and hence prevent the objective from being met. These factors include: the demographic structure of the population; the effect of social tradition and beliefs; the provision of education, transport, and health services; and off-farm occupations.
