Abstract:This paper discusses the results of a survey undertaken to investigate the problem of infertility among some tribes of western Equatoria, Sudan. Notably the Zande and Makraka tribes show exceptionally high infertility rates, being 51 percent among the Zande and 47 percent among the Makraka. The paper examines medical, and social and cultural reasons for this high level of infertility. The effect of social factors (instability of marriages, adultery, premarital relations; all resulting from the destruction of old institutions) can only be suggested. Although a link can certainly be made between venereal disease and infertility, it can not be taken as a prime cause of infertility. A more significant fact is the coincidence between the incidence of filaria and the level of infertility. Ref.
