spirit possession
Abstract:Belief in spirit possession, zar, is an increasingly widespread phenomenon throughout Sudan. In the introductory section, the author discusses the meaning and origin of the zar cult in Sudan. Subsequently, the social background of female devotees or associates in Omdurman and the pattern of their participation in zar is analysed. Finally, a summary of sixteen individual zar case studies is presented. The research was mainly carried out in Omdurman during the periods April to July 1971 and April to September 1973. Notes, ref.
