Abstract: | Women's work patterns in the different regions of the Sudan show great variety and there are many differences even within one area. In them all, however, women's contributions are consistently underestimated. Census data, the major source for investigating such work patterns, is particularly unreliable in this respect. In this chapter, examples of a traditional type of agriculture (in northern Kordofan) and of a modern agricultural scheme (the Gezira Scheme) are considered with a view to assessing women's real contribution to the agricultural work force and to focusing attention on what extension workers and development planners can do to take into account the needs and activities of rural women and integrate them into the framework of larger development programmes.
