Abstract: | Songs by the Egbe Bomade Oku Bčmbé ensemble all tend to centre on the beliefs, traditions and customs of the Egbá (Ogun State, Nigeria). The importance they attach to their own music, culture and environment is clearly evident in the song texts. The author describes the social role of song texts as they relate to Egbá culture under the following headings: historical songs, ritual songs, funeral songs, praise songs, and songs of social control.
