Abstract: | Legislative measures adopted in Botswana to protect and preserve the environment can be grouped under three broad headings: protection of animals, protection of flora, and protection of the health and welfare of the people. The relevant enactments are described in turn, and the author concludes that while the implementation of the policies envisaged has, in some cases, not been effective, it cannot be said that there have been any serious lapses. Moreover, the conflicts which have arisen in respect of the pursuit of economic policies and the implementation of environmental laws are normal. Nonetheless, a major flaw in Botswana's effort to protect the environment is the absence of a central body charged with the coordination of environmental affairs. Notes, ref. |
