| Abstract: | This case study of Ruvuma Region, south Tanzania, investigates - from the geographical point of view - changes caused by the transformation of African subsistence cultivators into farmers with (partial) market relations, and aims to contribute to the discussion as to whether this has resulted in genuine agricultural development. The investigation first describes the natural environmental framework and the socioeconomic relations within the traditional subsistence agriculture. This is followed by a survey of the causes and the historical development of the commercialization process in colonial and postcolonial times. Finally, the resulting agricultural systems are presented. Fieldwork was carried out in 1982-1983. |
