Abstract: | Archaeological work has taken place in several areas of northern Malawi never previously investigated, most notably in the valley of the upper North Rukuru river northwest of the Nyika plateau. Here a substantial iron-working industry was found to have existed in the past. The authors provide a locational record of some 30 sites and occurrences, drawing on historical information as well as comparative archaeology, and using an archaeological time scheme which starts from the earliest of the Iron Age periods and moves forward to the present. The possible range of conditions and influences affecting smelting practice and iron production through the Iron Age are demonstrated. Bibliogr., notes, ref. |
