| Abstract: | A comparative analysis of the characteristics of indigenes of Ganye Local Government Area living in other parts of Nigeria and those at home, based on survey data collected in December 1975-January 1976, shows that dissatisfaction with the home environment generated by the acquisition of education is the main factor of spatial mobility among young people. Lighter filial responsibilities is also an important factor of mobility, while the search for economic betterment is the predominant motive for movement from the area. There is also evidence of movements induced by health and psychological reasons. Men far outnumber women among the migrants. The situation in Ganye Local Government Area is believed to be similar to that in many other rural areas, where youths acquire an education which cannot be optimally utilized in their home area. In order to forestall massive migration of youth from the area, Ganye town needs to be developed as a growth centre and the present school curriculum should be geared more towards agricultural education and vocational training.
