Abstract:Returns and productivity coefficients were estimated for selected inputs used in integrated sugar production at Bacita Sugar Estate, Kwara State, Nigeria, for the 1964/65 to the 1983/84 production seasons, using the Cobb-Douglas production function. Cane production was elastic with respect to hectares harvested and water supply, while sugar production was elastic with respect to tonnes of cane processed, with both cane and sugar production indicating increasing returns to scale at the 1.0 percent level of significance. The computed marginal productivities indicated excessive use of field labour but an efficient labour utilization in the factory; while marginal returns to fertilizers and tonnes of cane processed were higher than their acquisition costs. Thus, with greater efficiency in resource allocation, there is wide scope for increasing sugar production on the Estate substantially. Bibliogr., notes, ref.
