Abstract: | Adult education is seen as a potent force in rural transformation, thus presupposing a kind of relationship between adult education and rural development. It has been observed that rural development agents, who pursue varying functions albeit aiming at the same goal, hardly appreciate the need for collaborative planning and execution of their programmes at the grass-roots level. The authors, respectively Head of the Adult Education Department, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (Nigeria), and Acting Head of the Extension Services Department, University of Sokoto, Sokoto, make a strong case for the multi-agency approach to rural development, where the adult education agency is called upon to serve as locus for harnessing the approach. This is borne out of practical experience at Ahmadu Bello University, where the Centre for Adult Education and Extension Services embarked on operationalizing the concept of multi-agency. This experiment entailed the continuous involvement of relevant campus-based academic and service departments in programme development and implementation for the purpose of public enlightenment and community action.
