Abstract:This paper examines the relationship between government revenue share in GNP and economic development in Egypt. Using per capita income as a quasi-index of development, a simplified model is constructed describing the growth of government revenue share in GNP as a function or real per capita income development. The model is tested on the basis of statistical data for the period 1952/53-1984/85. The results indicate that there is a general positive relationship between government revenue share in GNP and the real level of income. The analysis also indicates that the growth in direct taxes, indirect taxes, and other components of government revenue share in GNP are all positively related with real per capita income increases and thus with economic development. However, there seems to be a shift in the relative importance of the various components of government revenue share in GNP, indirect taxes losing in importance with economic development. Notes, ref.
