Abstract:Past research suggests that the disappointing overall ACP trade performance under Lomé conceals two different trends. It is largely the result of the sharp fall in prices and volumes for the ACP's traditional export commodities. At the same time, there has been a rapid growth of ACP exports of new commodities, although the absolute value of this trade is still so small that it does not significantly offset the decline in major commodities. This article updates and extends what is known about the second trend. It is based on EC import figures for some 180 product categories for each ACP exporting State, all developing countries, all extra-EC imports, and total imports for the period 1976-1987. The article focuses on eight groups of related goods: canned tuna, leather and leather products, fresh flowers, vegetables, processed tropical agricultural products, wood products, yarns and fabrics, and clothing and linen. It concludes that there are reasons to suppose that the Lomé provisions have been helpful and that they could provide further help to other ACP States in the future. Bibliogr., notes.
