Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to offer an interpretation of the structures and dynamics of social change operating in South Africa; to show the radically opposed forces operating in the system; to offer a model for the mapping of contemporary events; and to suggest a number of steps to defuse the situation and construct a relatively peaceful South Africa. The paper first presents the findings of the Human Sciences Research Council's investigation into intergroup relations, published in 1987. Then it explains the model, used by the present author to examine the dynamics of intergroup relations, viz. the reform-violence helix, which aims at identifying the major variables and interrelationships involved. Next, the author suggests parameters and conditions for fundamental reform, ending with an assessment of likely future events. Bibliogr.
