Abstract: | The current world economic crisis has serious implications for many African countries, where living conditions are deteriorating, GNP is declining, and the level of repression is intensifying. The structural adjustment measures pushed by the IMF and the World Bank have undermined the sovereignty of these countries and the rights of self-determination embodied in the struggle for national independence are being subverted. This paper argues that there is a positive correlation between accumulation and repression and that repression becomes more intense as the crisis of accumulation deepens. However, various forms of popular resistance have forced the IMF to slow down the implementation of the adjustment programmes and in several cases militant opposition has led to a complete break with the IMF.
