Abstract:One of the great themes in Islamic African history of the 18th and 19th centuries is the impact on African Muslims of the various mystical reform movements usually described as 'Neo-Sufi'. A key figure in these movements was the Moroccan Ahmad b. Idrīs (1749-1837). This paper discusses the Idrīsi tradition in Northeast Africa, notably in Somalia. It aims to show that Somalia and East Africa fall within essentially the same pattern of development in regard to the 'tariqas' as most other parts of Muslim Sudanic Africa, namely that it was not until the late 18th or early 19th century that Sufi brotherhoods operating as supraterritorial networks made their appearance.
