Abstract:The Ibibio Union may be defined as a progressive, cultural, welfare association, which was formed by people all over Nigeria who belonged to the ethnic group known as the Ibibio. The Union was founded in the city of Calabar in 1927. In 1928 it was amalgamated with the Ibibio Mainland Association in Uyo, and in 1948 it assumed the more distinctive name of Ibibio State Union on the adoption of a written constitution. The initial aim of the Union was to protect all Ibibio against insult, abuse and oppression. Subsequently, the Union became an instrument of policy for educational advancement and social and political change. The ultimate aim became the reestablishment of the unity of all sections of the people historically identifiable as of Ibibio origin and stock. The author, the longest serving general president, later national president, of the Union, having held office from 1947 to 1961, describes the Ibibio Union's birth, foundation, growth, struggles, failures, and achievements, up to its proscription in 1966 in the wake of a military coup d'etat.
