Abstract: | The programme of rural socialism implemented by the Mozambican authorities in the form of collectivized villages did not recognize the importance of the strength/fragility relationship which characterizes the peasant agricultural system in Mozambique. Family production was evaluated neither as an important source of surplus nor as a factor of resistance to the transformations which were imposed. On the other hand, the economic fragility of domestic production rests on naturally precarious bases, on rudimentary tools of production and on deficient productive capacities at crucial points of the agricultural cycle. The implantation of collectivized villages thus provoked a profound disequilibrium among the diverse components of the agrarian system, imposing risks of agricultural rupture and of social destabilization on the collectivized villages.
