Abstract: | In responding to J. Krikler's article on the transition to socialism in South African agriculture (In: Africa Perspective, N.s., vol. 1, no. 5/6 (1986/89), p. 95-120), the present author scrutinizes some of the problems in the content and methodology of Krikler's article and analyses their implications. The central difficulties she identifies are the inaccurate interpretation of historical experience, the simplistic conception of how historical experience can usefully and fruitfully be brought to bear on contemporary problems, and the undialectical use of classical Marxist texts. Examining these central difficulties has the effect that a substantial part of the present article is devoted to a fairly detailed discussion and analysis of aspects of the Soviet experience and of some of the theories and practices which were defined within it. The last section deals with some of the primary political and economic forces to be considered during a transitional phase in the South African case. Notes, ref. |
