Abstract:This book is the culmination of an interdisciplinary project sponsored, for the most part, by the United Nations Environment Programme. The Save catchment area in southeastern Zimbabwe is of national importance in Zimbabwe's agricultural development; it also typifies many of Zimbabwe's socioeconomic and environmental problems. The study centres on the area of the proposed Condo dam. The study analyses the linkages between environmental processes and basic needs satisfaction, focusing specifically on two of the 'core basic needs': health and food. It contains the following chapters: The Save study: background and methodology (introduction, objectives, study area, and method); Resource use and agricultural production (land use patterns, crop and livestock production, and use of grass and woodland resources); Environmental degradation (changes in vegetation, soils and hydrology, and people's attitudes to change); Socioeconomic aspects (infrastructure, services, household economy, food and health needs satisfaction); Links between the environment and basic needs satisfaction; Population-resource interactions (growth rates, projections and carrying capacities). The concluding chapter specifies the economic, social and environmental measures required to promote protection and improvement of the environment in harmony with the satisfaction of basic needs.
