Abstract:This is a critical review of François de Blois' 'Problems in Axumite Chronology', presented in August 1988, at the Xth International Conference of Ethiopian Studies in Paris. The argument centres on the question of the identity of the Axumite Kings Aizanas and Saizanas. This is assessed on the basis of various Greek inscriptions, a letter written by the Byzantine Emperor Constance II in AD 356, coins, Greek and Syriac sources, and the king's list at the end of the 'Kebra Nagast'. Related to the question of identity is the question as to whether King Aizanas (or Ezana) introduced Christianity into Ethiopia, and whether this happened during the fourth century AD or after AD 518.
