Abstract: | This paper uses a growth-accounting production-function approach to analyse the sources of industrial growth in Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Rates of total-factor-productivity growth (TFPG) are calculated for these countries during 1964-1983. The estimates indicate negative rates of TFPG in Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia; for Zimbabwe, the rate was positive but insignificant. For all these countries, increases in factor inputs account for most of the growth in manufacturing. By contrast, studies for developed and some developing countries show an unimportant contribution by TFPG. This paper considers some possible causes of poor performance in TFPG in the countries studied. The role of changes in capacity underutilization, market sizes, macroeconomic policies, market structures, and technological capability are analysed. Bibliogr., notes. |
