| Abstract: | The strategy of Egypt's quinquennial plan 1987/88-1991/92 is to realize relatively higher growth rates exceeding those of the population, while achieving structural reform in the national economy through supporting commodity sectors, particularly agriculture, industry and energy. The plan aims to achieve an average annual growth rate of 5.8 percent, as well as an increase in final consumption, with an annual growth rate of about 4.5 percent. The plan reveals an increasing reliance on the private sector. In order to reduce the impact of external factors on the Egyptian economy there is to be less reliance on petroleum, Suez Canal and workers' remittances, and more stress on commodity sectors. Besides enhancing the national economy's abilities towards self-sustaining growth, the plan aims to ensure a fair distribution of the benefits of economic development so as to maintain social stability and foster incentives of production and growth. The targets aimed at in the plan's first year, 1987-1988, are also briefly summarized. Note. |
