Abstract: | The authors contend that a convergence of international approaches to the South African question will contribute significantly to the creation of a positive environment for the negotiated resolution of the South African conflict. These approaches must be based on the principle that South Africans must take the lead in resolving their own problems. The article first describes the changes that have taken place within the National Party since the introduction of the 1983 Constitution, and the attitude of the ANC towards negotiations. Then it describes the policy of the USA, Great Britain and the Soviet Union towards South Africa and shows that international tendencies leading towards a convergence of policy positions are emerging.
