Abstract: | The inadequate supply of clean drinking water and the frequent pollution of existing supplies create very grave health problems for people in developing countries like Nigeria. Water serves as a vehicle for the transmission of various diseases which have contributed immensely to the stagnation of the economic development of some of these nations. Presently there are hardly any guidelines in Nigeria governing the location, construction and operation of wells. This study determines the quality of well water in Zaria City, Kaduna State. Results indicate gross faecal contamination of well water. The closeness of latrines to wells was found to have significant correlation with high bacterial densities. The situation in Zaria City calls for a closely integrated view of sanitation and water supply, with an overall reappraisal of water supply arrangements for the city by both the local government and the State Ministry of Health.
