Abstract: | Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world and yet is experiencing serious environmental problems. Tanzania has been trying to eradicate poverty, ignorance and disease in the shortest possible time through the modernization of agriculture and industry, but this strategy has been characterized by a lack of environmental awareness. This paper examines the environmental problems with which the agricultural sector is faced. These include: overcultivation, overgrazing and overutilization of the limited resources, causing extensive land degradation; withdrawal of large amounts of water, vegetation, soil and labour for the needed development; transfer of rural poverty to the urban centres, thereby creating passive and active space in rural and urban areas respectively; use and misuse of agrochemicals, industrial waste disposal, mining activities, domestic household wastes and natural hazards. Environmental management options for a sustainable agriculture in Tanzania must begin with the endorsement of environmental legislation with respect to agricultural activities. Such legislation should strive for more natural and biological conservation measures rather than for expensive technical solutions. App., bibliogr. |
