Abstract:The importance of urban centres in the process of socioeconomic development coupled with the need to find solutions to the socioeconomic problems arising from the process of urbanization has made systematic urban planning an important aspect of national development planning in Africa. Against this background, the present book analyses the principles and practices of urban planning in the African context in general and in Nigeria in particular. The following aspects are examined: the process of urbanization (defining urban areas, historical perspective on the city, recent urbanization, the urban economy), systems of cities (classification of cities, theories and empirical studies of urban systems, urbanization and the urban system in Nigeria), the internal structure of cities (land use structure, residential areas, commercial areas, industrial areas, transportation), and urban planning (principles and techniques of urban land use planning, urban land use planning in Nigeria, planning the Nigerian urban system).
