Abstract: | Since its founding, Liberia has incessantly emphasized the importance and necessity of formal education. However, in light of the importance of planning, is education really planned in Liberia? If so, what approach or approaches are employed? Are plans implemented? How and with what results? To respond to the preceding questions, the author carried out a study based on a review of the literature concerning educational plans in Liberia and interviews with 15 Liberian scholars and officials previously or presently associated with educational planning or educational administration in Liberia. He concludes that educational planning in Liberia is marred by myths, miseries and mysteries. Educational planning in Liberia is a myth in that this process is not carried out in the country. However, successful planning at the institutional level clearly indicates the availability of Liberians who can devise realistic and implementable plans. Abandonment of such plans for no obvious reasons, however, leads to misery and disillusionment among planners. It is a real mystery that, in spite of the foregoing, there are accomplishments in Liberian schools. These achievements can only be attributed to the assiduity of teachers and the tenacity of students. Bibliogr. |
