Abstract: | If Tanzania is to stand up to the Arusha Declaration principles on foreign relations, that is, a continuation of liberation support in Africa, fight for African unity, non-alignment, support of the United Nations and a self-reliance development strategy, then the following major actors in world politics have to be faced: the USA, the Soviet Union, China, and the EEC. The author analyses Tanzania's relations with these political actors, discusses regional cooperation within Africa, notably the East African Community, and examines the trends of foreign relations since 1985, when President Mwinyi was elected as the second president of the Republic.
