Abstract:The Gezira irrigation scheme lies between the Blue and White Nile rivers south of Khartoum (Sudan) and is fed principally by gravity irrigation from the Sennar dam on the Blue Nile. For the Gezira scheme, the eighties have been a decade of missed opportunities and the scheme is operating well below its potential. Ch. 1 provides information on the project area. Ch. 2 contains the project description, paying attention to the storage dams, and the conveyance and distribution system. Ch. 3 sketches the scheme's operational requirements. Ch. 4 is devoted to the management of the scheme, which is divided between the Ministry of Irrigation and the Sudan Gezira Board (SGB), and the role of farmers and the tenancy system. Ch. 5 examines the scheme's actual performance in terms of operation and maintenance activities, and operation and maintenance budgets. Ch. 6 is devoted to agricultural production on the scheme (cropping systems and yields). Ch. 7 examines the recovery of operation and maintenance costs. Ch. 8 is concerned with the question of how to improve system performance.
