Title:What motivates Nigerian craftsmen in task force situation: a case study of ASCON

Abstract:Most managers in the public service of Nigeria are irked by the work attitude of craftsmen. Because basically all questions of performance or non-performance relate to motivation, this paper investigates what motivates craftsmen to do their jobs well. The study throws light on the behaviour of Nigerian craftsmen in a task force situation and also reveals what may be lacking in the management of craftsmen in a formal management setting. The subjects for the study were drawn from two task forces (a group of carpenters and a group of motor mechanics) set up by the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON) to carry out specific functions of top priority. The Protocol Analysis Method was used for the study. Four tables present verbatim-recorded accounts of experiences of the craftsmen and how these were interpreted. They are followed by a more detailed discussion of the findings with respect to the following variables: desire to demonstrate competence; availability of materials; non-recognition of previous efforts; negative rating by superior and others; recognition of self-worth; freedom to operate; non-bureaucratic processes; expectation of reward; desire to keep/reciprocate promise; desire to show seriousness; opportunity to demonstrate competence; supply of work protectives/safety; determination to save costs for the organization; promise of reward; and availability of time. The author concludes that the motivations of the two task forces were essentially determined by human needs, and thus managers should pay attention to this. Ref., sum. in French and Arabic.
