Abstract: | The author is concerned with two related topics: the English language in South Africa, and those South Africans variously known as English-speaking South Africans (ESSAs). In the first part he examines the factors which have strengthened the position of English in South Africa, notably the role of English in education. In the second part he examines the ESSAs' identity. He believes that the ESSAs are in for a most difficult and taxing time. Unlike the other South African languages, English will be everybody's, a cultural melting pot. He fears the development of grammatical or phonetic variants so marked that English will cease to be a means of communication, not only with South Africa but with the rest of the world.
